The Giant Taro is a native of the rainforests of the South East Asia. The underground tubers are edible if cooked well, but its sap contains tiny crystal needles which is known to irritate the skin. The local folk use the large heart shaped leaves as a makeshift umbrella when struck by sudden downpour. In Hawaii there is a saying ʻAi no i ka ʻape he maneʻo no ka nuku’, which translates to ‘The one who eats the ‘ape (Taro) will have an itchy mouth. All actions will have consequences.
