Open-pollinated plants are more genetically diverse. This allows plants to slowly adapt to local growing conditions and climate year-to-year. If all local conditions are apt, the seed produced will remain true-to-type year after year which helps retain original varieties over long periods of time.
At UrbanMali, we source seeds from local farmer collectives to share with urban gardeners. As hybridisation and the fascination for shapes and colours take priority, nutritive quality reduces. These seeds are not poison treated and sold within the viability period.
