7 Tips to Grow Vegetables During Monsoon Season

Monsoon season is here again. Unfortunately, we are back to our usual weather patterns. Rainy days, cloudy skies, and cool temperatures.

We all love fresh vegetables and fruits. They add flavor to our meals. And they are nutritious too.

So, let us tell you how to grow vegetables during monsoon seasons.

1. Choose the Right Location

Choose an area that receives plenty of sunlight. If possible, avoid areas with shade.

It is advisable to choose a location that has a south-facing aspect. It gives you maximum exposure to direct sunlight.

2. Prepare the Ground or the Pot

Before planting seeds, prepare the ground or the pot properly. Make sure that the soil is loose and moist. Your vegetable plants need well-drained soil.

Add organic matter such as manure or compost to improve its quality.

Make sure that the soil does not contain any weeds. Remove these using hand tools.

3. Plant Seeds

Now, place the seeds in holes prepared in the soil. Cover each seed with 1/8th inch of soil.

When the leaves of the vegetable start turning yellow, harvest the crop.

Cut off the stem near the base of the plant.

Leave the root intact. Cut the roots into pieces if it is a root vegetable like carrots, potatoes, etc.

Remove the leaves if it is a leaf vegetable like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, etc.

Store the harvested crops in a refrigerator for up to 3 days.

You can also freeze them for later use.

How much sunlight do vegetables need?

Most vegetables require some form of light to grow. They need at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight every day. However, most vegetables are not happy living under trees and shrubs. They prefer total sun exposure.

They need at least 4 hours a day of direct sunlight. Plants grown in shaded areas tend to produce smaller fruits and leaves. This is because plants use energy to make food, and less light equals fewer calories.

How often do I need to fertilize or add manure to vegetables?

Add organic manure once before sowing.

Add it once during the flowering.

Add it every two weeks during the maturing season.
