Over the last four years, under the we have been trying to set up gardens on our own with botanists and a small gardener team. While we managed to grow some endangered plants, the impact that we have been able to make has been very small, considering the large population in a city like Bangalore. On an average, we created one garden in 3 months, which wasn’t a sustainable option for us, moreover that meant less native plants being planted.
With a wish to find an innovative solution to this problem, we conducted a small study to see how garden lovers go about getting a garden. While, there were a lot of people who set up their own gardens, most people first look for a local gardener to start off. These gardeners are easy to find, you could ask a neighbor, a local nursery or get a recommendation from a local store. However, while finding a gardener is easy, most gardeners acquire plants from a local nursery and use a ton of pesticides to grow these plants. The plants found at most nurseries are exotic, which means that they originated in another country and need extra care and attention to grow. Therefore, the ample sprays of chemical help the plant avoid any infection or insect attack.
The UrbanMali Network creates organic and native plant home gardens in the city by empowering local gardeners. Creating more native plants gardens encourage urban biodiversity creating a Living Herbarium in the city.
